What Is Single Origin Coffee? (And Why It Tastes Better) Black Candle Coffee

If you've been shopping for specialty coffee lately, you've probably seen the term "single origin" everywhere. But what does it actually mean — and does it really make a difference in your cup?

The short answer: yes, it absolutely does. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is Single Origin Coffee?

Single origin coffee is coffee that comes from one specific place — a single farm, a single cooperative, or a single region within one country. Unlike blended coffees, which combine beans from multiple origins to create a consistent flavor profile, single origin coffees are traceable to their source.

That source could be as specific as a single farm in Medellín, Colombia, or as broad as a cooperative of smallholder farmers in Chiapas, Mexico. Either way, the key is transparency: you know exactly where your coffee came from.

Single Origin vs. Blend: What's the Difference?

Blends are crafted by combining beans from multiple origins to achieve a specific, consistent flavor profile. A great blend is designed to taste the same every time you brew it — bold, balanced, and reliable. Our Coffee Blends like the 6 Bean Blend and Cowboy Blend are perfect examples.

Single origins, on the other hand, are all about showcasing the unique character of one place. The flavor changes with the harvest, the season, and the specific lot — and that's the point. Every cup tells a story.

Why Does Single Origin Coffee Taste Different?

The flavor of coffee is shaped by a combination of factors called terroir — the same concept used in wine. This includes:

  • Altitude — Higher altitude = slower cherry development = more complex sugars = better flavor. Our Peru single origin grows at 1,100–1,700 meters.
  • Soil type — Volcanic loam (like in Bali and Colombia) is rich in minerals that contribute to the coffee's depth and sweetness.
  • Climate & rainfall — Consistent rainfall and temperature swings between day and night create ideal growing conditions.
  • Variety — Just like wine grapes, different coffee varieties (Caturra, Bourbon, Typica, etc.) have distinct flavor characteristics.
  • Processing method — How the coffee cherry is removed from the bean dramatically affects flavor. Washed coffees are clean and bright; natural processed coffees are fruity and complex.

Our Single Origin Coffees

At Black Candle Coffee, we source single origin coffees from some of the world's most celebrated growing regions:

  • Colombia (Medellín, Antioquia) — Dried orange, berry, chocolate. Grown by smallholder farmers at 1,300–1,500m on volcanic loam soil.
  • Peru (Piura & Amazonas) — Salted caramel, silky sweet, citrus. Grown by Cooperativa Agricola de Servicios Norandino at 1,100–1,700m.
  • Mexico (Chiapas) — Chocolate, cinnamon, green apple. Grown by farmers from Chiapas and Oaxaca at 900–1,000m.
  • Bali (Kintamani) — Dark chocolate, molasses, brown sugar. Grown by smallholder farmers at 1,200–1,600m on volcanic loam.

Is Single Origin Coffee Better?

"Better" is subjective — but single origin coffee is more interesting. If you want a consistent, reliable cup every morning, a great blend is your best friend. If you want to explore the world through your coffee cup and taste what makes each region unique, single origin is where the magic happens.

The best part? You don't have to choose. Many coffee lovers keep a blend for their everyday morning cup and a single origin for when they want to slow down and really taste what's in their mug.
